Lake Kinneret (Sea of Galilee)

(Joshua 12:3)

Sweet water lake in northern Jordan Valley known as Sea of Galilee and associated with the miracles of Jesus. It has been called by many names:  Sea of Galilee, Sea of Tiberias, Sea of Ginnesar and others.

Major sources: Jordan River, streams from the hills and rainfall.  Its surface height is approximately 210 meters (689 feet) below sea level, length – 21 km. (13 miles), average width – 12 km. (7.5 miles). Along its generally narrow shores are 3 fertile valleys.

During the Israelite conquest it was included in the Naphtali tribal allotment and during the Second Temple Period its shores were lined with many Jewish villages: Tiberias, Migdal, Susita, Bet Yerah, Kefar Nahum. The lake and many adjacent sites are holy to Christians.

The entire area was captured by the Israel Defense Forces in the Six-Day War, and today the Sea of Galilee is a popular recreation spot and much-visited site for Christian pilgrims.
