Rehoboth (in the Negeb)

(Genesis 26:22)

Large settlement ruins in the Negeb.

“And he removed from there, and dug another well; and for that they strove not:  and he called the name of it Rehoboth;  and he said, For now the LORD has made room for us, and we shall be fruitful in the land.”

The name Rehoboth is mentioned in Bible as the site where Isaac dug a well. The Biblical name has  been retained in the Arabic – Ruheiba.

Nabateans established a way-station at this ancient crossroad;  it became a city during the Roman Period and reached its pinnacle during the Byzantine Period (Believed to have been some 10,000 inhabitants.)

Remains of many buildings whose walls reach considerable heights, remains of 3 churches, tombstones with Greek inscriptions and fragments of columns and capitals.South of the ruins is an ancient well with man-made upper section.
