Sartaba

Sartaba (Alexandrion)

Cone-shaped hill overlooking the Jordan Valley, 6 km. west of Adam Bridge (Damiya).

Height: 377 meters (1237 feet) above sea level. At summit is Alexandrion fortress built by King Alexander Yannai (ca. 126-76 BCE) or by Queen Salome Alexandra (Shelomziyyon HaMalka) in 90 BCE. Also called Sartaba. The fortress was destroyed by Gabinius (1st century BCE  Roman governor) but then rebuilt. Here Queen Salome Alexandra (139-67 BCE) kept her treasures, anticonvulsants-info.com imprisoned his wife Mariamne I; and his two sons, Alexander and Aristobulus, met their death here. During the Second Temple Period this was probably a signal mount where fires were lit to announce a festival and new moon. The fortress destroyed around 70 CE.
