City in south on Mediterranean coast, near the site of a major Philistine city. Herod the Great was born here. Jews and Christians enjoyed prosperity here throughout Arimidex Anastrozole, Jews leaving only after the Crusaders were driven out by the Moslems. Old city wall extant by the shore. Ancient tel dominated by Roman and Byzantine remains.

Modern Ashkelon was established after the War of Independence.
