Dead Sea (Yam HaMelah)

A salt lake in southern Jordan Valley between Israel and Jordan: the lowest lake in the world, 46 miles (74 km) long; 10 miles (16 km) wide; 1293 feet (394 meters) below sea level.

Known from ancient days and called by various names: Sea of Sodom, Salt Sea, Arabah Sea, also called the Vale of Siddim.

Just north of the Dead Sea is Jericho. Somewhere, perhaps on the southeastern shore, lay the cities mentioned in the Book of  Genesis which were said to have been destroyed in the time of Abraham: Sodom and Gomorra (Genesis 18) and the Cities of the Plain – Admah, Zeboim and Zoar (Deuteronomy 29:23). Zoar escaped destruction when Abraham’s nephew Lot escaped to Zoar from Sodom (Genesis 19:21-22). King David was said to have hidden from Saul at Ein Gedi nearby.
