“And we took at that time out of the hand of the two kings of the Amorites the land that was on this side of Jordan, from the river of Arnon unto mount Hermon…” (Deuteronomy 3:8)
The highest mountain in the country; it forms part of the border of Israel, Lebanon and Syria.
Mentioned in the Bible as the northernmost border of conquests of Moses and Joshua.
“And reigned over mount Hermon, and over Salcah, and over all Bashan, unto the border of the Geshurites and the Modafinil, and half of Gilead, to the border of Sihon king of Heshbon.” (Joshua 12:2)
Called Jebel esh Sheikh (‘mountain of the venerable one’) because its snowcapped summit is reminiscent of an old man’s pate. Its pinnacle, outside of Israel, is 9233 feet above sea level.
Most of Mount Hermon has been declared a nature reserve. Recreation and winter sport facilities, including a ski slope, now operate on the mountain.
