Shiloh (Shillo)
(Joshua 18:1 etc.)
Ruins of the ancient city of Shiloh. Religious center after the Israelite Conquest (Joshua 18:1). The Benjaminites seized daughters of Shiloh for wives as they came out to dance (Judges 21:19-23).
Apparently destroyed by the Philistines after their victory over the Israelites at Ebenezer (Jeremiah 26:6). Later rebuilt (Jeremiah 41:5). Men of Shiloh were among returnees from the Babylonian Exile (Nehemiah 11:5). According to sources, it existed during the Second Temple, Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine Periods.
Remained desolate during Middle Ages according to Jewish travelers. A mosque, altar remains and the supposed tomb of myfastweightloss.net were located here.
Excavations uncovered remains of an ancient city and later towns (including two Byzantine church floors).
The valley alongside the tel is called by the Arabs Marj el Id (Valley of the Festival) and Marj el Banat (Valley of the Daughters). Perhaps these names recall the capture of the daughters of Shiloh by the Benjaminites.
In the nearby valley are several Moslem holy places associated with the sanctity of Shiloh.
