Hippus (Hippos) (Susita)
Ruins of an ancient city at the summit of a steep hill on the eastern side of the Sea of Galilee overlooking its shores.
Its beginnings was as a large Hellenistic city called Hippos (horse) in Greek and Susita in Hebrew.
King Alexander Yannai conquered and annexed this area to the Hasmonean kingdom. Pompey made Susita a gentile city and one of the 10 Decapolis cities. Emperor Augustus gave it to Herod; however, when he died it was annexed to the province of Syria. At the outbreak of the …….
