Via Dolorosa (Old City of Jerusalem)
Via Dolorosa – (literally sorrowful road) is also called the Way of the Cross. It is made up of a series of narrow lanes in the Christian Quarter of the Old City that according to Christian tradition was Jesus’ route from Pilate’s judgment hall to Golgotha.
Stations of the Cross: There are 14 stations, each one commemorating an event along Jesus’ route to crucifixion.
First Station – Jesus is tried and condemned to death in the Antonia Fortress (near the Lions’ Gate of today). Second Station – Monastery of the Flagellation, where Jesus was scourged by Roman soldiers. Third Station – where Jesus fell for the first time under the weight of the cross. Fourth Station – Our Lady of the Spasm, where Mary fainted on seeing her son. Fifth Station – where Simon of Cyrene helped Jesus carry the cross. Sixth Station – where St. Veronica wiped Jesus’ face. A church and monastery are located here. Seventh Station – where Jesus fell for the second time. Site of a Franciscan chapel. Eighth Station — where Jesus said: “weep not for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children” (Luke 23:28). Site of Charalampos Convent. Ninth Station – where Jesus fell for third time. Tenth to Fourteenth Stations – are within the Church of the Holy Sepulchre (Golgotha).
