Kursi

(Mark 5:11)

Abandoned village with remnants of a Byzantine monastery on eastern shore of Lake Kinneret.

It is believed to be the site of the ancient town of Kursi where a pagan temple stood, according to the Talmud.

Christian tradition associates this site with Jesus’ miracle of the swine. (Here Jesus healed a man possessed by devils and changed them into a herd of swine who then rushed into Lake Kinneret and drowned.)

Excavations uncovered remains of a large monastery, surrounded by a wall that has Greek inscriptions from 585 CE. Along the shore are remains of an ancient boat anchorage.
